The Border Gate Carlisle restaurant Beefeater

Enjoy a warm welcome and a proper meal out with us at the Border Gate Beefeater. We serve specialty steak cuts and traditional pub classics right next to Carlisle and the Lake District. We’re a historic restaurant with a lot of character and the best place for delicious, relaxed meals in Carlisle.

Our team
We must have one of the most dedicated teams in Carlisle. A lot of our team have been with us for over 15 years, and every single member of our team goes the extra mile to make sure your meal is the best it can be. We know we serve great steaks, but a meal out is more than just the food: our great atmosphere, relaxed vibe and excellent service is all down to the hard work of our team.

Our location
There’s a lot of history to the Border Gate, although our restaurant was fully refurbished and modernised in 2019, the main manor house and exterior were built over 130 years ago in what was then known as Carrow House. We like to think we carry a lot of that heritage with us, though we’re now a much more comfortable place to eat after a long day!

We couldn’t be in a better spot for exploring Carlisle and the Lake District. We’re just off junction 42 on the M6, only a five-minute drive away from the centre of town.

As our restaurant was refurbished recently, we have a modern large open dining area with booths and a lot of windows for more light during the day. We show BT Sports in our bar area, which has plenty of space to stretch out and relax. And to top it all off, we have a great outdoor dining area, perfect for enjoying dinner out in the sun!

Make sure to take a look at our offers page for all our latest deals and promotions.

Why we love Carlisle
Here in Carlisle we love the north, there’s so much to see and do nearby. Most of our team have lived in Carlisle their whole lives, so if you want tips on where to go or what to see after your meal, ask away!

Our restaurant is only a short drive from brilliant places to visit like Carlisle Castle, Tullie House Museum, Carlisle Cathedral, Brunton Park and the world-famous Hadrian’s Wall. They’re all great spots whether you’re on a family day out or you just fancy a stroll through some nice scenery – best of all, we’re so close by, grabbing breakfast before you head out or settling in for a relaxing dinner after a long day is as convenient as can be.

The Lanes Shopping Centre is only a 20-minute drive or 30 minutes on a bus away from us with over 70 high street shops, so you can pick up everything you need in a flash.

Frequently asked questions

Beefeater restaurants serve the best steaks – everyone knows it, and it’s what most of our guests are after! Our 8oz fillet steak is the ‘Rolls Royce of steak’ according to our head chef, and it’s one of our most popular and most tender cuts. Like all our steaks, it’s aged for a minimum of 30 days, grilled to perfection, packed with flavour and served with chunky triple cooked chips, crispy flat mushroom, juicy grilled tomatoes and peppercorn sauce.

We do the best Sunday lunch in town at the Border Gate. With our Sunday roasts you can choose from our specialty roast sirloin of beef, rump of lamb, half-roast chicken or butternut squash & ale pie, served with all the trimmings and our signature red wine gravy. You also get unlimited roast potatoes and other delicious extras.

It’s got to be the Premier Inn Breakfast, which we serve at the Border Gate Beefeater. An unlimited selection of the best of an English breakfast. That’s bacon, eggs cooked just how you like them, hash browns, black pudding, toast and plenty more with free tea and coffee.

A Premier Inn Breakfast is just £9.50 per adult, and if an adult orders up to two kids eat for free. Our lighter alternative, the continental breakfast is £7.50 per adult.

If you order a Premier Inn Breakfast or a continental breakfast you can enjoy unlimited coffee, tea and juice. A free drink is included as part of our Meal Deal, too. We offer free refills on soft drinks.

The safety and wellbeing of our guests and teams is always our number one priority, which is why we introduced the Generous Serving of Safety promise across our restaurants to make sure you can sit back, relax and enjoy dining out in Carlisle. We make family meals out stress-free. We’ve got the perfect menu for kids’ meals, plenty of space for kids to stretch out and our team are all brilliant with children. Give yourself a break and let us treat you to a family dinner without any hassle.
